En route to Dambulla visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage
On your journey, you’ll visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, located northwest of Kegalle. Established in 1975, this sanctuary was created to care for and protect orphaned wild elephants, often found wandering near Sri Lanka’s forests. Each elephant is provided with approximately 76 kg of green fodder daily, along with 2 kg of a specially prepared food mix containing rice bran and maize. Known for housing the world’s largest herd of captive elephants, the orphanage attracts both local and international tourists daily. Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains, the massive column of rock, known as Lion Rock, dates back to the reign of King Kasyapa (477–495 AD). The king chose Sigiriya as his capital, adorning its walls with stunning frescoes and constructing a magnificent palace atop the rock. Access to this elevated wonder was ingeniously designed through the mouth of an enormous lion carved into the rock, symbolizing both grandeur and protection.

Minneriya National Park, spanning 8,889 hectares, is renowned for its impressive population of elephants, often seen in herds of 100 to 150 roaming the jungle and gathering near the lake’s catchment area.
