Located 20 miles (32 km) from Nuwara Eliya via Ambewela and Pattipola, Horton Plains spans 3,160 hectares and is a natural wonder of Sri Lanka. Known locally as Mahaeliya, the plains were renamed in honor of Sir Robert Horton, a British Governor who served from 1831 to 1837. Designated a Nature Reserve in 1969 and upgraded to a National Park in 1988, Horton Plains is celebrated for its critical role as a watershed and its rich biodiversity.
The park’s flora boasts remarkable endemism, with hills cloaked in diverse wet lowland evergreen forests. On the higher, windswept slopes, even large trees grow close to the ground.
