En route to Dambulla  visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

On your journey, you’ll visit the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, located northwest of Kegalle. Established in 1975, this sanctuary was created to care for and protect orphaned wild elephants, often found wandering near Sri Lanka’s forests. Each elephant is provided with approximately 76 kg of green fodder daily, along with 2 kg of a specially prepared food mix containing rice bran and maize. Known for housing the world’s largest herd of captive elephants, the orphanage attracts both local and international tourists daily. A highlight of the visit is watching the elephants bathe—a truly captivating experience.

  • Check in to the hotel and you would spend your evening enjoying and relaxing the summer weather and scenic beauty at the hotel.

VISIT DAMBULLA CAVE TEMPLE

Perched amidst Sri Lanka’s verdant landscapes, the Dambulla Cave Temple, also known as the Golden Temple of Dambulla, is a shining example of the island’s rich cultural and historical heritage. Situated atop a towering rock, this sacred site is a treasure trove of ancient art, featuring over 150 intricate paintings and frescoes spread across five vast caves.

Originally built during the reign of King Valagamba in the 2nd century BCE, the temple was transformed into its stunning form after he reclaimed his throne. Today, this historic Buddhist monastery remains a revered pilgrimage site, captivating devotees and travelers with its breathtaking art and architecture that embody Sri Lanka’s spiritual and cultural essence.

SIGIRIYA ROCK FORTRESS

The UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, stands as a remarkable testament to ancient ingenuity and artistry. Renowned as Sri Lanka’s most visited historical monument, this fortified garden city is an extraordinary example of urban planning, landscape design, construction technology, hydraulic engineering, and fine art—all harmoniously integrated with the natural environment.

Rising nearly 200 meters above the surrounding plains, the massive column of rock, known as Lion Rock, dates back to the reign of King Kasyapa (477–495 AD). The king chose Sigiriya as his capital, adorning its walls with stunning frescoes and constructing a magnificent palace atop the rock. Access to this elevated wonder was ingeniously designed through the mouth of an enormous lion carved into the rock, symbolizing both grandeur and protection.

MINNERIYA JEEP SAFARI TO SEE HERDS OF ELEPHANTS (OPTIONAL).

Minneriya National Park, spanning 8,889 hectares, is renowned for its impressive population of elephants, often seen in herds of 100 to 150 roaming the jungle and gathering near the lake’s catchment area. The park is a haven for diverse wildlife, hosting approximately 300 wild elephants alongside wild buffalo, wild boar, spotted deer, sloth bears, sambhur, leopards, and jackals. It is also home to 9 amphibian species, 25 reptile varieties, 160 bird species, and 26 types of fish, making it a must-visit destination for nature and wildlife enthusiasts.

Day 2: Over Night Stay in Nuwara Eliya

OVER NIGHT STAY IN NUWARA ELIYA

  • Enjoy your breakfast at the hotel and depart to the next destination Nuwara Eliya.

NUWARA ELIYA

Often referred to as the “Little England” of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya is a picturesque destination set amidst stunning landscapes of mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and lush tea plantations. Known for its cool climate, the area offers weather reminiscent of an English spring day, with chilly temperatures at night.

The influence of British colonial heritage is evident throughout Nuwara Eliya, with charming country cottages and elegant Queen Anne-style mansions dotting the town. At the heart of it lies Victoria Park, a delightful spot for leisurely strolls, picnics, or birdwatching, where rare bird species can often be spotted.

Unlike other parts of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya experiences seasonal changes reflected in its vibrant blooms—spring flowers from March to May and autumn hues in August and September. During these “seasons,” residents from the lowlands often retreat to Nuwara Eliya to escape the heat and humidity of the coast, making it a serene and refreshing getaway.

HORTON PLAINS NATIONAL PARK

Located 20 miles (32 km) from Nuwara Eliya via Ambewela and Pattipola, Horton Plains spans 3,160 hectares and is a natural wonder of Sri Lanka. Known locally as Mahaeliya, the plains were renamed in honor of Sir Robert Horton, a British Governor who served from 1831 to 1837. Designated a Nature Reserve in 1969 and upgraded to a National Park in 1988, Horton Plains is celebrated for its critical role as a watershed and its rich biodiversity.

The park’s flora boasts remarkable endemism, with hills cloaked in diverse wet lowland evergreen forests. On the higher, windswept slopes, even large trees grow close to the ground. Horton Plains is home to 52 species of resident birds and 11 migratory species. Its grasslands and forests provide sanctuary for an array of wildlife, including over 2,000 to 3,000 Sambhur, Bear Monkeys, Leopards, Barking Deer, Giant Squirrels, Fishing Cats, Wild Boars, and Hares, though sightings beyond the Sambhur—visible during mornings and evenings—are rare. Uniquely, this is the only National Park in Sri Lanka where visitors can explore designated trails on foot.

Enhance your adventure by taking a scenic hike to Piduruthalagala Mountain, Sri Lanka’s tallest peak. Starting amidst the lush landscapes of Horton Plains National Park, the crisp mountain air and breathtaking scenery make this journey an unforgettable experience.
