HORTON PLAINS NATIONAL PARK

Located 20 miles (32 km) from Nuwara Eliya via Ambewela and Pattipola, Horton Plains spans 3,160 hectares and is a natural wonder of Sri Lanka. Known locally as Mahaeliya, the plains were renamed in honor of Sir Robert Horton, a British Governor who served from 1831 to 1837. Designated a Nature Reserve in 1969 and upgraded to a National Park in 1988, Horton Plains is celebrated for its critical role as a watershed and its rich biodiversity.

The park’s flora boasts remarkable endemism, with hills cloaked in diverse wet lowland evergreen forests. On the higher, windswept slopes, even large trees grow close to the ground. Horton Plains is home to 52 species of resident birds and 11 migratory species. Its grasslands and forests provide sanctuary for an array of wildlife, including over 2,000 to 3,000 Sambhur, Bear Monkeys, Leopards, Barking Deer, Giant Squirrels, Fishing Cats, Wild Boars, and Hares, though sightings beyond the Sambhur—visible during mornings and evenings—are rare. Uniquely, this is the only National Park in Sri Lanka where visitors can explore designated trails on foot.
